Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley
Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, at Long Beach California. DuVernay was introduced to the arts from her grandmother Denise. She worked as a night nurse to allow her aunt to have the time she needed throughout the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art as well as theatre. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt introduced the film to DuVernay. DuVernay learnt by doing that art can be a powerful instrument for activism. DuVernay had an aunt who was socially conscious and showed her how to use art as a method to express herself. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and brought up. DuVernay's dad recalled the civil rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, would later inspire her to make a film about The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay developed an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. Her first job was working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the responsibility of looking over the house and examining the trash from one of the juries. Her work left her dissatisfied with journalism so she decided to move towards the industry of public relations. DuVernay got a job right out college, as a publicist in the young age of a studio. She was promoted to the position and set up her own company for public relations known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Her agency launched numerous promotional and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
